Author’s Note: In case you didn’t know, I’ve been publishing some background posts for Inquisitor’s Promise in the last few weeks. If you haven’t seen them, I suggest you click here and here; they might provide some context for this post. For this week, I want to talk about the characters of the novel. I won’t be talking about every character in the book because that would mean a very long post. Instead, I will just show the major characters.

Main Character
Aeneas Aquilanus
A young Inquisitor for the Church, and the hero of the story. As the heir to the prestigious House Aquilanus, he knew that he had a lot to live up to. He would have to do so when his father, the Grand Inquisitor Anchises Aquilanus, was killed in the attack on their home Castle Aquila. Before his death, Anchises entrusted his son with his final mission: to unite the Holy League and defeat the apocalyptic threat of the Grey Globe.
As an Inquisitor, Aeneas had been trained in basic combat and military tactics. In addition, he had good knowledge of Holy League politics. This allowed him to navigate the complex world of 74th century Christendom. A consummate planner, Aeneas liked to plan ahead his course of action. But his cunning was checked by his tendency to see the best in others, which led to him taking actions that others may see as naïve.
Faction Princesses
Lavinia Aquilana
The daughter of Caius Aquilanus, the Grand Duke of Pacifica. This made her to be the faction princess of the Proletarian Faction. As the eldest daughter of the Simona Branch of House Aquilanus, she had spent much of her time in Nepoli to be closer with her cousin Aeneas. The plan, hatched by her father, was for both her and Aeneas to fall in love and be wed, thus ushering the reunification of House Aquilanus which had been split apart centuries prior.
While Lavinia was absolutely in love with Aeneas, the Inquisitor did not return his cousin’s feelings. This frustrated her to no end, though she was determined to win him over. As a deep one, she saw the reunification of House Aquilanus as vital to the restoration of her race’s rightful place within the Holy League. However, her pushiness did not win her any favors with Aeneas.
Giulia de Medici
The daughter of Doge Norberto de Medici of Veneto, Giulia was the faction princess of the Spacers. It was a custom amongst Venetian nobles for their firstborn to serve in the military, a practice which allowed the ruling class to be involved with the Commonwealth’s space empire. With Giulia being an only child, her father had her join the Venetian Sky Force as a ship medic. Amongst the soldiers, she quickly got a reputation for being a sour faced Lieutenant.
Though Giulia hated the military life, she wanted to please her father and accepted it. Already a temperamental woman, her new position made her even more irritable. Around this point, she made an acquaintance with Aeneas who was visiting Veneto as a representative of the Inquisition. The meeting was rocky at first when the Inquisitor unintentionally offended the girl and found himself at the receiving end of her fiery personality. But Aeneas remained patient and was able to string a conversation with her. Soon, Giulia saw in Aeneas a friend she could trust, though he himself did not know it yet.
Princess Omaha of Texarkana (Omaha Lee)
The eldest daughter of Emperor Hannegan CII, she was the Imperial Princess of Texarkana. On one hand, she took pride in her ancient lineage which went back to the beginning of the Age of Chaos. On the other hand, she was fully aware that the Imperium was only a shadow of its former glory. It also didn’t help that the Imperial House was also a mess. Her father was known for his adulteries which led to numerous bastards for the Emperor. Meanwhile, the Crown Prince was suffering a debilitating condition which limited his ability to express himself.
Upon this background, Princess Omaha wished to restore the Imperium to its former glory. To this end, she made rapports with various members of the Imperial Army. She also found a potential ally in Aeneas. When the Inquisitor was on a diplomatic mission to Texarkana with his father, Omaha was able to have a chat with Aeneas while the Grand Inquisitor was talking with the Emperor. It was then that the Princess learned that the Inquisitor held sympathies for the Imperialist faction. In Aeneas, Omaha saw a future Emperor, one who could fulfill her ambition.
Honda Kunoichi
The adopted daughter of CEO Honda Nintendo. Since the CEO of the Zaibatsu had no natural children, this made her to be faction princess of the Corporatist faction. The CEO’s decision to adopt Kunoichi raised many eyebrows for many reasons, the biggest being that the girl was a dark felinid, the race known throughout Christendom for their hostility to the Faith. Furthermore, her origins remained shrouded in mystery.
A socially awkward girl, Kunoichi rarely talked with other people. However, she found a friend in Aeneas. The Inquisitor, sent to Tokio as a bodyguard for the Papal Nuncio to the Zaibatsu, had a quick talk with her. This act of kindness, though small, left a huge impression in the felinid girl.
Galatea de la Mancha
The niece of Sir Juan Carlos de la Mancha, the Grand Knight of San Felipe. In addition, she was also the daughter of the late Miguel de la Mancha, the man responsible for the beginning of the Knights faction. As a young girl, she was stricken with the Malinche Disease, a genetic disease in the La Mancha family, but one that hit her particularly hard and left her a paraplegic.
Despite her circumstances, Galatea was not one to be discouraged. The girl was inspired by two things given to her: a wyvern egg from her father and a series of books on knighthood from her uncle. The egg eventually hatched into a mighty wyvern named Sancho Panza who was utterly loyal to her. Her uncle’s gifts led to her dream as a lady knight in service of an Inquisitor just like one of the storybooks she had read. The Inquisitor of her dreams came into her life when the bandit knight Raul de Cambrai rebelled against Sir Juan Carlos. Assisting the Grand Knight in putting down this rebellion was rookie Inquisitor Aeneas Aquilanus. When Juan Carlos’ victorious army returned in triumph, Galatea caught glimpse of Aeneas and instantly fell in love.
Other Major Characters
Pep Siman
A man from the Lektros Dimension, he was also a warrior of the bih’roe race. His powers allowed him to manipulate electricity and use them in ways that made him terrifyingly powerful. Though a mighty warrior, Pep’s main aspiration was intellectual. This stemmed from the philosophical bankruptcy of the Lektros Religion which he had witnessed for himself.
When the Holy League opened the Lektros Gate, Pep was the first Lektros to have made contact with them. As it turned out, Pep soon discovered the Christian religion during his discussion with Aeneas. He was quickly drawn to the Faith held by the Terrans.
Tsar Nikolai of Slavia (Nikolai Harlemov)
The current Tsar of Slavia, Nikolai grew up never intending to be one, only becoming the heir when his older brother was assassinated. As the second son of the then Slavian Tsar, Nikolai spent his youth as part of the Imperial Army alongside the man who would later become Emperor Hannegan CII. The two could not be any more different, Nikolai being strait-laced while Hannegan was a skirt chaser. In spite of that, the two became fast friends and their friendship remained strong in the following decades.
Because of this friendship, Emperor Hannegan saw Nikolai as his successor when it was clear that his son would not be fit for the throne. In order for Nikolai to succeed to the Imperial throne, he would have to wed Omaha, the Emperor’s daughter. Unfortunately for the Tsar, Omaha was not interested in marrying a man who was old enough to be her father.
Shaka de Boer
A mercenary from the mountains of Draka, Shaka was recruited by Aeneas when the Inquisitor was looking for soldiers to take out the pirates who were attacking Nepoli. As a pathfinder, he was known for his excellent sharpshooting. A quiet man who said very little, Shaka was not a man for long conversations.
Unbeknownst to the people around him, Shaka had a dark and complicated history. One that he preferred for others to remain ignorant of.
Nineveh V
The Swarm King and the fifth of his kind. As the latest successor to the Swarm king line, Nineveh held the memories of all the previous Ninevehs. This meant that he held the memories of the swarm prior to the banishment of the deep ones from Nepoli. As someone who commanded the might of the Swarm Army, the largest army in all Christendom, Nineveh would no doubt be a useful ally for Aeneas in his mission to defeat the Grey Globe. However, winning over the Swarm King would be easier said than done for the Inquisitor. With the memories of the previous Swarm Kings still vivid in his own mind, both good and bad, the Swarm King continued to hold a grudge against the main branch of House Aquilanus whom he saw as traitors.
