Author’s Note: This is actually part of a longer story I worked on a while back. Unfortunately, I ran out of steam but I might chase this story in the future. For now I’ll just get a flash fiction out of it. Enjoy!
It all happened so quickly. At the time, I was at East Capitol Street, on my way to work at the Library of Congress. In my car, I saw the bright blue sky turning blood red in a matter of seconds. Then, a huge gust of wind, like a hurricane. My car was flipped over, but I somehow survived. Ignoring the pain all over my joints, I was able to open the upside-down door and crawled out of my automobile before I realized that the ground was all red. When I stood up, I saw the horrifying sight in front of me. The road was all cracked, and I saw what looked to be fire breaking out from below.
But before I could get my bearings straight, I saw a red bestial creature with two horns lunging straight at me. It swung its claws at me, and I was thrown to the ground. Holding on to my bloodied arm, I knew that I was finished. The demon – for lack of a better word – was going to skewer me.
I was only saved by a wall of bright light which kept the creature away from me. I looked to my side to find my savior: a young girl about my age, perhaps a little younger; she had long golden-blonde hair and was dressed in all-white; but the most shocking thing about her was two wings on her back. Just who was this person?
I was about to find out when she turned towards me. She gave me a smile. “You!”
“Me?”
She nodded. “I can’t hold this thing for much longer. Find a weapon!” She motioned towards a wrecked police car close to where my car was.
“Understood,” I said.
I rushed quickly to the police car and found the windows opened. The officer inside was dead, he looked to have been killed on-impact. I grimaced, but still reached into the dead cop’s holster and was able to take out his gun.
I was in a rush, concerned for the girl who had saved my life. But when I turned around, she was nowhere to be found. Instead, the demon was lunging towards me. Without hesitation, I aimed the pistol at the demon and opened fire. Two bullets were lodged into the red creature’s chest, staggering it. I did not let up and kept firing.
The rounds were emptied, and the demon fell over. It must have been killed as it was burning up into ash before disappearing completely. On edge, I breathed heavily. Over and over again until…
“Good job!” a feminine voice rang out.
“Whoa!” I turned around and held my pistol to the source only to find that angelic girl. “Oh, it’s you.”
“You’re really a natural with that gun, you know. A little surprising, considering the area,” she said.
I chuckled, surely red with embarrassment. “I’ve spent some time at the range down in Virginia. Now what?”
The girl smiled. “Let’s make a deal. I’ll guide you through this hellscape.”
“And in exchange?”
“You’ll be my boyfriend.”
My eyes widened. “What?!”
But the girl did not seem all that perturbed by my expression of shock. “I guess you already have a girlfriend.”
“No,” I began, “it’s not that. In fact, I just broke up with my girlfriend last week.”
“Oh, I see,” she said, giving me the stink-eye. “I’m not good enough for you. Is that it?”
“No!” I cried. “It’s not that at all…” I paused and gathered my thoughts. “I suppose… I have nothing to lose. I accept your terms.”
“Great!” she said excitedly. “I never had a boyfriend before.”
I groaned, wondering how she could be so lighthearted given the situation. “Never mind that! What do we do now?”
“Easy,” she responded. She then pointed to a nearby building; it had a distinctive look compared to the houses around it.
I recognized that building, how could I not? I went to Mass there every Sunday. “Saint Cyprian?”
The girl nodded. “The Holy Comforter-Saint Cyprian Catholic Church if I’m not mistaken.”
“Why there?”
“All Catholic churches serve as sanctuaries against these demonic creatures,” she answered.
I nodded. There was no reason for me to question that claim. “Then let’s go. Though I’d like to know the name of my new girlfriend.”
“I’m… Angela… umm… LaGuardia.” She then flashed a sweet smile. “And you?”
I told her my name.
In response, she giggled. “That’s a cool name. Glad I’ve met you.”
I couldn’t help but smile. DC was now a demon-infested hellhole, but with Angela by my side, I couldn’t help but feel optimistic about my chances.

Wow, how unrealistic a young man finding a nice girlfriend in DC. Seriously though nice snippet.
This is just an average day in D.C., in my experience. Last time I was there I got stuck in traffic for like three hours because of a demonic outbreak in Georgetown shut down the highway. Ridiculous place.
